There were two reasons for this occasion. The first one was to celebrate the World Hijab Day and to show support for all Muslim women. As one man wrote: “Today is the day of our queens, princesses and sultanas.” The second reason was to show disapproval to the recent decision of High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The decision refers to the employment of people with some kind of religious marking. In that way, they decided that women with hijab cannot work in any public institutions related to law. We went out on the streets to show that the decision is harming our basic human rights in this country and that the way we dress cannot influence our work. So many people supported our peaceful protest, which included non-Muslim people. With this protest, we fight for our basic human rights and we will not stop until this decision changes.

Stay positive dear people, fight for your rights and support others. Do not let anything stop you in your life!

The post Today is the day of our queens, princesses and sultanas appeared first on World Hijab Day.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">2882</post-id>

To each their own

World Hijab Day

Blog

christian hijabi

confident

hijab

support

world hijab day

By Alyson Core (Christian-USA) My husband, Andrew, and I ended up heading to Meijer after he got home from work to pick up a few things, and the trip solidified why I love living in Columbus. My daughter, Andariel’s fascination with my shiny scarf, and my husband’s support made me super confident leaving the house.

Upon arriving, I received some stares, but nothing my husband or I felt were negative, just curious. Throughout the store was the same, though there was one couple that seemed a bit uncomfortable and would hurry from the aisle if we came down it. Oh well. To each their own, I suppose. When we got to the self-checkout lane, the gentleman working those lanes came rushing over to help scan our large items with a big smile on his face. As we were leaving, the young woman working the other self-checkout complimented my scarf and talked to me for a few minutes before we headed to the car. She is Muslim, and I see her there all the time in her beautiful hijabs.

Overall, today was an amazing experience, and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful event!!!

The post To each their own appeared first on World Hijab Day.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">2877</post-id>

Assemblyman David Weprin issues statement in support of ‘World Hijab Day’

World Hijab Day

Articles

Blog

Endorsement

Hijab

Assemblyman David Weprin

endorsement

February 1st

support

supporter

world hijab day

World hijab day endorsement

QUEENS, NEW YORK – Assemblyman David Weprin issued the following statement in support of ‘World Hijab Day’, observed on February 1, 2016. ‘With hate crimes against Muslim-Americans tripling in 2016, it is important we take this moment to stand together with our fellow Americans on World Hijab Day. Rooted in the American principles of religious freedom and liberty, the World Hijab Day movement seeks to end the discrimination and judgment that comes with wearing a hijab.’

‘As the prime Assembly sponsor of the ‘Religious Garb’ bill in New York State, A2049, I stand with all Americans of faith regardless of their choice to wear a hijab, kippah, turban, or cross. All Americans of all faiths should be allowed to freely exercise and display their religious choice without the fear of violence and bigotry.’

Today’s statement follows several actions Assemblyman David Weprin has taken to protect religious attire in New York. In 2005, then New York City Councilman Weprin stood with the Sikh Coalition and introduced a bill barring city agencies from discriminating on the basis of religious headdress. Similarly, in 2014, Assemblyman Weprin was the prime sponsor of the ‘Religious Garb’ bill in Albany. Passing with a 131-6 vote, the bill protects equal employment opportunities for all New Yorkers, regardless of religious attire and facial grooming.

About Assemblyman David I Weprin:

Elected in 2010, David I. Weprin represents the 24th Assembly District of New York State in Queens. Comprised of the partial or entire communities of Briarwood, Bellrose Manor, Fresh Meadows, Glen Oaks, Hillcrest, Holliswood, Jamaica Estates, Jamaica Hills, Oakland Gardens, Queens Village, Richmond Hill, and Utopia; the 24th Assembly district boasts one of the most diverse constituencies in New York State.

About World Hijab Day:
Founded by New York native Nazma Khan in 2013, World Hijab Day is a means to foster religious tolerance and understanding by inviting women to experience the hijab for one day.

View the original Letter: Click Here

The post Assemblyman David Weprin issues statement in support of ‘World Hijab Day’ appeared first on World Hijab Day.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">2811</post-id>
