My dear curious non-muslim,
If i can just summarize the logic behind covering yourself, it is quite simple. The point of proper hijab, is to allow a woman be defined by her soul rather than by her looks. Imagine a world where people are judged only according to their capabilities and achievements and talents rather than their bodies. A hijab allows a woman to excel and function to her unlimited capabilities not because she is a woman but because she is a human. I hope this makes sense and answers your questions. And no it does not ask you to cover yourself infront of your family, but infront of men who are considered as strangers and might look at you in a lustful manner.
Good luck :)

In reply to Curious non-Muslim.

My dear curious non-muslim,

If i can just summarize the logic behind covering yourself, it is quite simple. hello Curious non-Muslim
Allah has commanded in the Qur'an to stay away from zina (fornication) in surah Al-Isra', and in a hadith of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w narrated by Muslim, it has been elaborated that zina is not limited to sex alone. it may be zina of the eyes when you are looking, zina of the ears when you are listening, zina of the hands when you are touching, zina of the foot when you are walking towards it, zina of the heart when you are wishing and longing for it, and the private part confirms or denies it.
hair is one of the gift that Allah has given to us women. it adds to your charm as a lady, and it makes you attractive. sometimes, when the opposite gender see your hair, they can be attracted to you. it can make them feel like they wanna touch it or whatsoever, and it is not impossible that that desire goes to being lustful. pin point, it may create desire which may lead to an unwanted outcome, which is zina. it may not happen all the time, but Islam just closes all the possible ways to zina, not putting its people at risk.
i hope my explanation helps! :)

In reply to Curious non-Muslim.

hello Curious non-Muslim
Allah has commanded in the Qur’an to stay away from zina (fornication) in surah Al-Isra’, and in a hadith of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w narrated by Muslim, it has been elaborated that zina is not limited to sex alone. it may be zina of the eyes when you are looking, zina of the ears when you are listening, zina of the hands when you are touching, zina of the foot when you are walking towards it, zina of the heart when you are wishing and longing for it, and the private part confirms or denies it.

hair is one of the gift that Allah has given to us women. it adds to your charm as a lady, and it makes you attractive. sometimes, when the opposite gender see your hair, they can be attracted to you. it can make them feel like they wanna touch it or whatsoever, and it is not impossible that that desire goes to being lustful. pin point, it may create desire which may lead to an unwanted outcome, which is zina. it may not happen all the time, but Islam just closes all the possible ways to zina, not putting its people at risk.

i hope my explanation helps! 🙂

By: Curious non-Muslim

Curious non-Muslim

As the name states, I am curious as to why covering ones head/hair is a symbol of modesty? In our society today modesty is not very common it seems but when one dresses in an appropriate manner it is attractive. Is there a reason your god has told you to cover up your beauty and does that include your family as well? I'm not trying to be ignorant but I am genuinely interested in the meaning and rational behind this. Thanks in advance to anyone who might help educate me in this.

As the name states, I am curious as to why covering ones head/hair is a symbol of modesty?
